Javier Telléz: Shadow Play

Kunsthaus Zurich, Zurich, Switzerland

Overview

The exhibition featured a representative selection of film installations that the artist had completed in the last ten years, including Letter on the Blind, for the Use of Those Who See (2007), Caligari and the Sleepwalker (2008), Dürer’s Rhinoceros (2010) and The Conquest of Mexico (2012).

Javier Téllez’ films address ‘otherness’, involving a close collaboration with disenfranchised groups of society, such as psychiatric patients or people with disabilities. Téllez invites them to participate actively in his production process, so they become co-writers of the scripts and the main actors of his films, helping the artist to build cinematic narratives that combine documentary and fictional elements to provide a new reading of literary and philosophical texts, classical myths and historical events.
