Watch Paul Mpagi Sepuya and Florian Ebner, Chief Curator of Photography at the Centre Pompidou, talk about the current exhibition Lustrer at Galerie Peter Kilchmann Paris.
The artist talks in detail how moving into a new studio space was an inspiration to expand his practice of studio photography and delve further into the history of photography.
Lustrer is the latest in Sepuya’s project DAYLIGHT STUDIO / DARK ROOM STUDIO (2021 - ongoing), in which his anachronistic take on 19th and early 20th century Western European and American photo studios becomes a site for both playful and tensely charged interactions and reflections, bringing a contemporary Black and queer perspective to the origins of desire within the medium.
This artist talk took place on June 23 at Galerie Peter Kilchmann Paris, Rue des Arquebusiers 11-13, 75003 Paris. Lustrer runs parallel to Sepuya’s exhibition Push/Pull at the gallery’s Zurich venue.
