Dagoberto Rodríguez: Refugios y Umbrales

Centro de Cultura Contemporánea Conde Duque, Madrid, Spain

Overview

In these pandemic times, the world is no longer a "global village", but has become an archipelago of solitudes. For Cuban artist Dagoberto Rodriguez, the island is also a metaphor of the human being and his condition of isolation, a reflection of the global insularity in which we live "where the proximity of the other is sometimes seen as a danger".

Dagoberto Rodriguez's installations for the central patio of Condeduque reflect on the idea of inhabiting and passing through today's world:

Refugio is an artistic approach to the idea of solitude and individualism in our contemporary societies and is related to the idea of the island and the hermitage as an icon of the concept of recollection and reflection. Extrapolating it to modern life, it is conceived as a space free of interference where we can find ourselves.

Thresholds are doors that transport us to a space that is neither real nor located, they are paths of communication that take us through the darkness of an area of light. They convey the image of the irreversible, the test or the passage from one state to another. Each door symbolizes its infinite nature.
