Grace Schwindt : A History of Touch

Museum M

Leuven, Belgium

Overview

In June 2023, Grace Schwindt was invited as a Thinker in Residence at M Leuven. During her residency, she conducted in-depth research and engaged in discussions with collection managers and conservators, developing a keen interest in the notion of "care" in relation to museum objects. This research led to the creation of new works, partly based on photographs and drawings she made in the Museum depots. She explores the connections between fragmented images, fractures, and scars found in historical works, linking them to her broader investigation into the fragility and representation of bodies.

The exhibition presents a selection of recent works alongside entirely new creations inspired by historical pieces from the museum’s collection, including monumental paintings, watercolors, and bronze and ceramic sculptures.

Grace Schwindt’s journey at M Leuven— from her research in the museum reserves to the creation of new works and the curation of this exhibition— is documented in a short film, which will be presented around the time of the opening.
