Jorge Macchi: Beaufort24, Beaufort Triennal, Belgium

Overview
JORGE MACCHI
All the words in the world

Monument in Koksijde

Beaufort Triennal

Belgium

March 23 - November 3, 2024

A keyboard without the keys – does it indicate the inability to express an image through language? Is our language inherently limited, or is there a sea of unknown possibilities? Today, we digitally connect with the world, which has both advantages and disadvantages. Some argue it leads to alienation from others, while for others, it allows for new possibilities and a more inclusive society. This work of art was brought to life thanks to the assistance of students from VTI Bruges, while the artist guided them digitally.

The sea is visible through one side of the concrete carcass, and the urban landscape through the other. The structure is reminiscent of a stripped apartment building.

This work is conceptualised as the counterpart of Jorge Macchi’s Dictionary of dead words from 2023: a wall installation with alcoves containing letters, similar to the initials on the sides of dictionary pages. People have a deep desire to collect words and knowledge, and to compile encyclopaedias.
