Zilla Leutenegger: The Spiral Stair to planta1Planta 1, Madrid, Spain
Since 2004, when Zilla Leutenegger (Switzerland, 1968) began her series of video installations based on the different spaces that make up a home, the artist has developed several more, which will be completed in the coming days of September 2023 with Spiral stair to planta1.Object, video projection and sound.
The project refers to planta1’s first space in Madrid, located on the first floor of an industrial warehouse building, which the organisation continues to maintain, although it is now located in a street-level space in the Carabanchel district of Madrid.
Continuing with his usual scenes in which reverie and imagination play an overriding role, Zilla suggests that we imagine that the exhibition space has become a kind of duplex apartment in which a person lives, whose shadow we can discover by going up and down the spiral staircase that leads from the first floor to street level.
A study in movement that speaks of the constants in Zilla’s work since the beginning of his career: his interest in spaces, the relationships that people have with these spaces and the light, both natural and artificial, that unfolds its often-magical effects on these spaces and people.
