Los Carpinteros: La Cosa está Candela

Museo de Arte Miguel Urruita, Bogotá, Colombia

Overview

The exhibition planned for the Miguel Urrutia Art Museum is one of the largest retrospectives of Los Carpinteros to date and their first major solo show in Colombia. With some thirty works, the show presents the entire formal and conceptual range of their artistic production.

Along with their best-known pieces -Sala de juntas, Catedral, Clavos Torcidos- there are practically unknown works by the artists, such as Concreto roto, Bola de pelo or 20 gentes; as well as unpublished pieces, such as Surround with sound your ass and Tres casi guitarras. The exhibition also emphasizes the work and experimentation processes behind the artists' work. The "experiments", as they call their research, will be present for the first time in an exhibition, including sketches, process drawings, texts, molds and other objects that are part of this "laboratory of mutations" that is the artists' studio.

"La cosa está candela" proposes to explore the work of Los Carpinteros from a semiotic perspective and to understand their entire production as a system of signs, ambivalent, contradictory, paradoxical and yet tremendously subversive. Humor is their strategy.
