"Champ d’expériences" (Field of Experiences) marks the arrival of a new director at the Vassivière Island International Art and Landscape Centre (Centre international d’art et du paysage de l’île de Vassivière). The exhibition draws its inspiration from past exhibitions at the Art Centre but also gives a foretaste of future programming. More than forty works – mainly sculptures and photographs – by twenty-one different artists are displayed in twin exhibitions running concurrently at the Art Centre and the Château of the island.
The choice of works reflects the links between landscape and sculpture and was guided by a desire to ensure continuity between the new programming and the history of the venue. At the same time there was a deliberately subjective effort to show the close links that have grown up since the end of the eighties between some of the artists who have exhibited at the Art Centre, the local art scene and regional public collections.
In keeping with this most uncommon of venues – a veritable field of potentialities – and also with the way it is experienced physically, the exhibition is a journey around materials and substances in all their aspects. A number of works interrogate the raw material and its possible transformations. The materials used in the sculptures, on a gamut from physicality to evanescence, reflect the substances, the temperatures and the climate that one senses on the island.
The exhibition circuit progresses in cyclical fashion from the Art Centre to the Château, from interior to exterior, while the order of display in each building evolves from the substantial to its dissolution and vice versa.
