Uwe Wittwer: Settings of Wrath

Musée Ariana, Geneva, Switzerland

Overview

In this  exhibition, Uwe Wittwer offers us a dialogue between his works, painted on glass plates and placed at the back of the showcases, and German porcelain parrots from the 18th and 19th century selected by the artist from the museum collections.

Precious birds, exotic luxury items designed to adorn the interiors of European princes and kings’ palaces, are transformed here into an evocation of the fauna of the Amazon jungle.

Staged in the twelve showcases of the Ariana upper gallery, these settings distil the sulphurous atmosphere that permeates Werner Herzog's film Aguirre, Wrath of God (1972).
