Our presentation at Art Basel showcases essential discussions in contemporary art and emphasizes the diverse methods of painting and sculpture that are integral to the gallery's program.
Galerie Peter Kilchmann is also pleased to introduce "Never Again" by Monica Bonvicini: an evocative exploration of institutional futures and the complexities of human desires. First presented in 2005 and most recently showcased at the Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin, Germany, this thought-provoking work continues to captivate audiences with its powerful message.
In "Never Again," Bonvicini crafts a compelling vision of a future where bodies, desires, and individualities converge within institutional settings. As spectators cautiously enter the space, they are confronted with an invitation to seize their own freedom, a call that resonates deeply within the core of this installation.
While underground aesthetics and participatory practices have become more commonplace, the installation's magnetic force lies in its demand for a heightened tolerance for ambiguity and uncertainty. The swings, repurposed from their usual sexual connotations, collide with one another, resisting simplistic or fixed interpretations. Instead, they offer a multifaceted spectrum of possibilities: playfulness, rejection, excitement, relaxation, prohibition, domination, or submission.
"Never Again" stands as a testament to Bonvicini's ability to create an immersive experience that challenges societal norms and pushes boundaries. Through this installation, she confronts us with the intricate complexities of human desires and urges us to explore the profound indeterminacy that lies within. Prepare to be captivated by this compelling artwork, as it provokes introspection and invites us to question our own perceptions and boundaries.
