Francis Alÿs' "A Story of Deception" both the title of the work shown at Portikus (r 2006) and of the book is not only a story about illusions, but simultaneously a story about altered perceptions of a work that was realised in Argentina over the course of three years and shown in Frankfurt for the first time outside of the country where it was originally realised. After the film, "A Story of Deception", was presented at the Museo de Arte Latinoamericano de Buenos Aires (Malba), the opportunity presented itself to take this line of thought and to transfer it to a different context. The image that Alÿs founded in Patagonia the fuite en avant, or the ambition to tackle a situation head on that ends in the manifestation of a Fata Morgana, evolves from a story from Patagonia into a metaphor for the general notion of progression.
