Installation view: 'Jorge Macchi. Container', Kunstmuseum Luzern, Lucerne, 2013

The wallpainting “Cathedral” by Jorge Macchi evokes the memory of a sight test. The letters don't only get smaller but also seem to disappear in the distance. Just as the architecture of a cathedral not the sole sign is important but the overwhelming experience of perceiving something that goes beyond our senses. The moment a person enters a cathedral the person shifts in size in comparison to the represented authority. The encouter with this wall painting has a similar effect on the viewer. “Cathedrals” is also a humorous artwork; Jorge Macchi created a test which can't be completed and therefore every tested person fails.
